The amount of detail put into creating these warriors is amazing.

Each figure is different, so not two figures look alike.

Archeologists estimate that there were over 8,000 soldiers, 520 horses, 150 cavalry horses and 130 chariots.

There are so many figures that not all of the terracotta army has been unearthed.

There are four pits of soldiers that are currently unearthed about 1.5 km east of Qin Shi Huang’s burial ground.

Pit one is 230 meters long and has an estimated 8,000 figures.

Pit two contains cavalry, infantry and war chariots.

Pit three was designed as a command post with high ranking officials.

The fourth pit is empty. 

History

The Terracotta Army was created for China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

The purpose was to help him rule another empire in his afterlife.

A necropolis designed for the emperor has also been excavated.

Construction of the warriors began when Qin Shi Huang was only 13 years old.

He didn’t want any two soldiers to look alike, which is why so much detail was used when creating these ancient masterpieces.

Qin Shi Huang’s tomb is under an earthen pyramid and remains unopened. 

Discovery of the Terracotta Army

Although these statues date back to the Qin Dynasty, they were not discovered until 1974.

Two farmers from the Xianyang Village discovered many broken pottery figures when digging a well.

Archeologists uncovered the terracotta warriors and were astounded at the level of detail and beauty. 

Visiting the Terracotta Army

In order to preserve the national treasures, guests cannot actually go into the pits and touch the terracotta figures.

It is one of the most amazing attractions in China, and possibly one of the most amazing attractions in the world.

Only a portion of the site is currently excavated.

The Terracotta Army is located about 30 minutes outside of Xi’An, which is the capital of Shaanxi province.

If you are coming from Beijing, it is a one hour flight or an overnight train ride to Xi’An.
